Interest Rate in Japan averaged 2.76 percent from 1972 until 2019, reaching an all time high of 9 percent in December of 1973 and a record low of -0.10 percent in January of 2016. In Japan, interest rates are set by the Bank of Japan’s Policy Board in its Monetary Policy Meetings. The BoJ’s official interest rate is the discount rate.

Mortgage rates today remain at historical lows, with over 60% of mortgage holders paying rates between 3.00% and 4.90% as of 2015. We used interest rate data from Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey (PMMS) to examine historical mortgage rates and the factors that have impacted their downward trend.

The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate fell to 3.79%, down 6 basis points from 3.85% a week ago. 15-year fixed mortgage rates fell 4 basis points to 3.13% from 3.17% a week ago.
